The old saying "mind over matter" is quite true. Our minds can achieve extraordinary things. However, in today's busy environment we need some help resetting our minds sometimes. Whether you're overwhelmed with responsibilities, anxious over the future, over-excited by what you have on at the moment, or finding it difficult to switch off from technology, it's important to give your mind a rest every once in awhile. Below are a few techniques you can try right away.
Do something active
Most of us are aware that exercise help reduce stress and release endorphins. Therefore, we simply had to mention this well known, yet usually overlooked, technique. Get outside and get moving, go for a quick walk and breathe some fresh air, or try something new.
Do something relaxing
Again, activities such as yoga and meditation are well known for their relaxing qualities and they are not as scary as they sound. There are many simple and free yoga resources, in app format or via YouTube, and only 10 minutes can help. Alternatively, just sit down in child pose (kneeling, head on the mat, arms by your side) and relax for a few minutes. And meditation isn't only for zen gurus – simply sit still, close your eyes, and focus on breathing in and out for 5-10 minutes. You'll feel calmer immediately.
Do something creative
There is another technique not as widely referenced, and that is to undertake a creative task. Many of us use the left side of the brain, for logical problem solving and analytics, and focusing on using our right side, for creativity, visualization, and imagination, can help resetting our minds. Try a creative task such as coloring in (which has become very popular recently!), lego building, drawing, or singing.
